Fairfax, VA – [May 18, 2025] – The Bernie L. Bates Foundation (BLB) proudly hosted its 11th Annual Scholarship and Graduation Recognition Reception at the Country Club of Fairfax, bringing together more than 100 guests, including students, parents, community leaders, and supporters. The event highlighted the foundation’s enduring commitment to educational advancement, mentorship, and community service.


The afternoon opened with an elegant reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and music, setting the tone for a celebratory gathering. Serving as Master of Ceremonies, Brother Jevon Walton guided the program with professionalism and warmth. Distinguished attendees included the Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc, Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter and the President of the BLB Foundation, along with First Vice District Representative Myron McDaniels and District Director of Public Relations Calvin Beidleman.   A special musical selection was performed by Mathieu Mercer, a past Talent Hunt winner, while Brother Patrick Garland provided soft jazz and contemporary music throughout the event


This year, the BLB Foundation awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships and recognition awards to deserving students.  BLB continues to strengthen its partnership with George Mason University as BLB continues to award annually $1000 to a qualified student. The largest honor scholarship of $5,000 was presented to Daniel Purvis, who will attend University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill to pursue a degree in Finance.

Keynote speaker Brother Junior Bernadin, Dean of Students at Ron Clark Academy, delivered an inspiring address challenging students to prepare diligently for their college journey. Using football as a powerful analogy, he reminded awardees that with discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, they can successfully navigate both college and life.


The luncheon concluded with heartfelt recognition of the students’ achievements and a call to continue supporting educational opportunities in the community. With over a decade of impact and providing over $700,000 (year to date), the BLB Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to empower the next generation of leaders through scholarship and mentorship.
